Dr. Phillips is a native of Holly Springs, Mississippi, but he grew up in a small town in northwest Tennessee. His undergraduate education was at the University of Mississippi, from which he received a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Dr. Phillips' M.D. degree was from the University of Tennessee, in Memphis, in 1968, and he then completed a medical internship at the University of Tennessee Hospitals. Dr. Phillips served in the United States Air Force, obtaining the rank of Major as a General Medical Officer stationed in Suffolk, England. His residency was completed at the University of Alabama in 1976. Dr. Phillips did additional postgraduate fellowship training in Cornea and External disease at the Duke University Eye Center in 1976 and 1977, and then returned to Birmingham. He is currently an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology in the Department of Ophthalmology at UAB, and Chief of Ophthalmology at Cooper Green Hospital. Currently, he is the Chairman of the Board of the Alabama Eye Bank, and just completed a two-year term as President of the Medical Staff at the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital. Dr. Phillips has been named to the Best Doctors in America, continually, since the year 2001 through 2006. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, board member of the Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of the Cornea Society, and a founding member of the International Ocular Surface Society. Dr. Phillips has authored papers in peer review journals, book chapters, and published his first book in 2002. He has received the achievement award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and is involved in resident teaching under the auspices of the UAB Department of Ophthalmology. Special interests are corneal transplant surgery, cataract and implant surgery, surgery of primary and recurrent pterygia, dryness of eyes, and the treatment of corneal ulcers.
