Q: What is an ophthalmologist?
A: An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who is specialized in eye and vision care. Ophthalmologists are trained to provide the full spectrum of eye care, from prescribing glasses and contact lenses to complex and delicate eye surgery. Ophthalmologists complete four years of medical school, a one year internship and a three year hospital based residency where they receive training in all aspects of eye care (i.e. prevention, diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of eye conditions).
Q: If my referring doctor told me I needed surgery, will I have surgery on the day of my exam at Alabama Ophthalmology?
A: No, you will not have surgery the same day. Once you have seen one of our doctors, your surgery will be scheduled for a mutually convenient date based on your individual eye condition.
Q: Will I be able to drive after my eyes are dilated? Should I bring someone with me?
A: You may need to bring someone to drive you home after your exam. Most of the time, dilation effects your near vision. Sunglasses are helpful after dilation.
Q: Can someone else bring my child to your office for an appointment?
A: We must have consent from a parent or legal guardian to treat your child. Please read Consent for Medical Treatment.
Q: How long will my eyes be dilated?
A: Everyone is different. We can not predict how long your eyes will be dilated.
Q: How long does an eye exam take?
A: Please allow 2 to 2 ½ hours for your eye exam. Most new patients and many return patients are dilated. New patients with oculoplastic problems are not usually dilated during the examination. Please allow one hour for those visits.
Q: Where do I park when coming for an appointment at the Birmingham office?
A: Please park underneath the building and come to the 2nd floor.
Q: How do I get a copy of my medical records? How long will it take to get them?
A: Complete a medical records release form and fax it to us at (205) 930-9127. It will take from 5 to 10 business days once we have received the medical records release and payment.
